Dear Friends of Greenwood Farm,

Happy New Year!  Information about our 2008 schedule is attached along with a request I hope you will take a minute to read and consider.  At this time of year, I know you receive many requests such as this asking for help to make plans come true.  Any assistance you offer will be greatly appreciated, because we all know how much horse trials need volunteers and sponsors.

What a year 2007 was! Our commitment to provide a spring International Horse Trial in Texas—the CIC 2*/1*-Weatherford—continued, and our twelfth annual Fall Horse Trials included Area V Championships. We debuted a new five-acre “Quarry Complex”, and over 500 horses competed on Greenwood’s beautiful turf.  Our course designer, John Williams, received the United States Eventing Association’s 2007 national award for his outstanding course designs, and Chris Milanesi, our course builder, was bestowed USEA’s “Post Hole Digger” award for his coursework—the only person to receive this honor twice!

Greenwood is being recognized as an excellent eventing facility where nearly eight miles of jumping challenges are created and maintained with pride, energy, and expertise.  Clinics and schoolings continue to train hundreds of horses, youngsters and newcomers to run cross-country safely and competently. They are conducted by such notables as horse behaviorist Steve Smith of “Extreme Mustang Makeover” renown, Rolex winner Nick Larkin, expert New Mexico 3-day rider Kathleen Zins, World Game medalist and instructor certification program maestro Don Sachey, and legendary British eventing champion Lucinda Green, to name a few.

Texas has produced many outstanding horses who have used Greenwood for their proving grounds, such as Truluck, ridden by high point phenomenon Phillip Dutton & Hugh Knows, ridden by 2007 Lady Rider of the Year Karen O’Connor. We’ve seen 2008 Olympic hopefuls Clark Montgomery of Mineral Wells and Will Faudree of Midland. And we are especially proud of our youth who won the United States Equestrian Federation’s National Team Challenge, a CCI 1* (long format) for Texas.

Generous sponsors have kept Greenwood Farm a viable, reliable horse facility for all of these equine activities, but more exciting and rewarding challenges are ahead. Eventing--the only equine sport involving cross-country jumping-- requires extraordinary course maintenance and continual improvement to offer state of the art challenges for all levels, from youngsters to Olympic veterans. This year, we are continuing our International competition course development, adding much-needed amenities to the Competitor’s Pavilion, and we’ll hold autumn Championships for the upper levels. Working to improve the sport, we will host junior team challenges, merit rider safety awareness programs and fundraisers for the young riders.

These expenses cannot be covered solely by entry fees. Keeping Greenwood Farm a place where riders can come with confidence each year can only be accomplished with strong community assistance. Please seriously consider your 2008 support of the Greenwood Horse Trials.  At this time of year, when we are all deluged with financial obligations, there are still many practical reasons why supporting the Horse Trials will be advantageous to you as well as beneficial for the community.
